Horta de Sant Joan

Horta de Sant Joan is a village and municipality in the Terra Alta region. It is located at 542 meters of altitude and surrounded by the villages of Caseres, Bot, Prat del Compte and Arnes, which belongs to the region of Matarraña, in Teurel province. In 1997, the old town of Horta de Sant Joan was declared National Cultural Good of interest in the category of historical heritage.

Visit the “Parc Natural dels Ports” Natural Park

This Natural Park is a massif that surpasses the limits of “Terres de l’Ebre” area. It is a sanctuary for fauna and flora very diverse. It stands out the presence of Hispanic goat, extensive wild pinewoods and precious valleys full of oak groves. There is also a large population of beech.

Roques de Benet

The “Roques de Benet” Rocks are located in the centre of the mountain system and separated from Horta by a large plain. They call for our glance and are a reference point in the Terra Alta region. These impressive rocks, which inspired Pablo Picasso, are the most emblematic rock formations in the Natural Park. Its vertical walls made of conglomerate are almost 300 meters high and abruptly end on a calcareous plinth.

Estrets d'Arnes

It is a typical mountain landscape made by a steep labyrinth of woods and rocks that surround a wonderful gorge. The “Estrets d’Arnes” strait is one of the most beautiful settings in the Natural Park, which is believed to be one of the most unspoilt areas in the south of Catalonia. This area includes about 450 hectares of crags and cliffs in the middle of pinewoods, scrubs and meadows, in the southern part of the National Park.
The Estrets River, main artery of the region, runs windingly jumping from pond to pond along the rocky formations, creating some curious walls.

Lo Parot

This giant olive tree belongs to an unknown variety. It has a barrel vault at 1,3 meters of altitude and it is 7,5 meters high, with a strain of 15 meters. The diameter of its crown is 9 meters, even though it used to occupy the whole width of its terrace before the Spanish Civil War (1936).
It is believed to be around two thousand years old, which means it was already there during the Iberian and Romans time.

Santa Barbara Mountain

The Santa Bárbara Mountain is a magnificent conglomerate rocky mountain shaped like a pyramid that is 735 meters high. It emerges behind the San Salvador convent. It was inhabited by eremites and it currently has remains of four hermitages: Sant Onofre, Sant Pau, Sant Antoni and on the very summit, Santa Bàrbara.

Sant Salvador Convent

The Sant Salvador Convent is a Franciscan convent dedicated to de Virgin of the Angels. It was built at the feet of Santa Barbara Mountain, heading east from Horta de Sant Joan. Its semicircular arch entry is considered one of the most important architectural elements from the Templar order in Catalonia.

Via Verda

This green line in the Terra Alta region is the perfect destination for hiking, biking and horse riding. It offers a wide range of wonderful landscapes and unspoilt locations full of silence and quietness.
This route follows an old railway track now out of use that used to connect La Puelba de Híjar with Tortosa, crossing the “Sierra de Pàndols” mountain range arriving to the Ebro River.

Picasso Museum

The Picasso Centre in Horta de Sant Joan is a permanent tribute to Pablo Picasso. It contains faithful reproductions of the works that Picasso created while staying in Horta, with which he immortalised the village. This Centre is located at the old Hospital, which is a renaissance style building.

Village of “Corbera d’Ebre”

This old village is the former location of the actual village of Corbera d’Ebre. This ensemble is gathered around the San Pedro Church and it was totally destroyed during the Ebro battle in Spanish Civil War. The Corbera ruins were declared “Good of Cultural interest” in 1992 by the Generalitat de Catalunya and are considered a monument to peace.
